I never really fished but I would like to start my daughters partner is a good fisherman he says he would set me up, I have micro camper is there anywhere in South-shields I could park for the night ?
I'm not sure, I think most of the carparks get locked on a night time.
Might sound dumb... but if i want to make the rig myself... should the lead be as heavy as the marking on the float? or a bit lighter lead
It can be a bit lighter along, as long its heavy enough to make the float stand straight up it the water it should be ok

It's just along from frenchmans bay on Google maps towards marsden. It gets quite busy along there so you might not get that spot mate.

Hi, I've got a few mackerel videos on my channel. The techniques are pretty much the same way to catch them all over the UK. Piers are probably your best bet as it's easier than from the rocks. Blyth pier would be your closest, I think.
Before the big storm last year smashed shields pier that was the place to go for you but you still can fish up to the first gate there but it will get busy soon when the fish arrive in numbers.

I was there about 3:30am until hw.
They was a good few people spinning from brigade hut to the storm gates absolute nothing was caught. Good to see you bagging a few . Tight lines .
Shouldn't be too long before they are in at the start of the pier. Tight lines mate.
What time is the best to fish for Mackerel ? I am so not friendly with ties. Keep up the good work :)
Usually first and last light a couple of hours up to high tide.
Hi Gary welcome back good to know the Mackerel are arriving now at last will you be trying up to the gate at shields or Littlehaven with the piers mostly shut it will get very crowded everywhere this year maybe even the Leas. Looking forward to one day meeting you and saying hello and thanks for getting me in to fishing again.😀

Thanks for sharing the location. Us landlocked midlander's need somewhere to go spinning! It's a huge expanse. Which side do you park? Three and a half hours away for me so want to utilise the time there well! Never even thought about reservoirs!😊
We parked at the south shore carpark first near the dam then drove around to the cronkley bay side then to the carpark at pow Hill. You can get a map at the lodge that will show you where all the carparks are.

Yes, you need a rod licence. You can get them online on the .gov website.
you need a license to fish any freshwater in the country and then permission or permit if not free buddy 👍🎣…. not many free places to fish these days ….. this spot is a cracking water to fish and using the correct gear and travel light you will love it 😁👍😁🎣🎣
